Separate the Minimum from the Maximum

Participation states the minimum number of relationship instances. Every order must have one customer, so Order participates mandatorily; a customer may have zero orders, so Customer participates optionally. In Crow’s Foot notation, a circle means zero and a bar means one. A mandatory relationship normally becomes a NOT NULL foreign key.
