How Two’s Complement Works

A bit pattern has no sign on its own — it only becomes a signed or unsigned number once you choose how to read it. In two's complement, the leftmost place value becomes negative, so flipping every bit and adding one turns a positive value into its negative counterpart.

GOAL

Interpret an eight-bit pattern as signed and unsigned values.

Can the same eight bits mean 255 and -1?
